We have spent many hours plumbing marine aquarium setups and have definitely made our share of mistakes. After much trial and error, the below photos seem to work best for gravity feeding a recirculating skimmer directly from your tank's overflow(s). Note that the closer the ball valve is to the skimmer with it being as far away from the T-fitting, the better control and less surging that your skimmer will experience.
