OPALINE
Thanks to Royan Webb, who graciously provided me with my first lovebirds carrying Opaline I was able to help the world start to develop this fantastic new color variety. Getting two birds who were only possible split for Opaline was very exciting but obviously the goal was to breed that elusive Opaline.
The down on an Opaline baby is a bright yellow but these birds were also carrying Orange Face which is also bright yellow and led to a couple of false starts. When the day finally came though and it was obvious that I had joined the ranks of less than a dozen people in the world who actually owned this color variety it was very exciting.
It would be difficult to describe the actual color of this bird as it has an effect on the whole bird not just the rosy head. The green of the normal is changed to an opalescent green which is much brighter than normal green. The tail feathers do not contain any blue as the normal does but the red is extended and the rump also carries no color. The head has the hooded markings of a masked lovebird but the black is replaced with a lovely intensified peach red.
Anyone who as seen a crossed masked-peachfaced hybrid knows that this is not a cross, but a new, true color variety.
With many combinations of this color now being bred I believe this to be one of the best mutations possible as it can be combined with everything we already have and adds more options as well as beauty to the wonderful world of lovebirds.
