The Diamond Rose Academie d'Armes Diamond Rose Academie d'Armes is an historical educational guild dedicated to promoting an appreciation of the techniques and principles of Western European Martial Arts through the study and practice and fighting systems from the 15th through the 17th centuries, with an emphasis on the sword and historical rapier combat. Our instructors are Chris and Katie Atkinson. Students learn the use of the rapier or the schlager and the short sword and the use of secondary weapons such as the dagger, cane, cloak, buckler, and the open hand. The school is located in Auburn, California. There are two different classes in separate locations. Throughout this website there is much information related to historical fencing. Information can be found on different topics related to Renaissance fencing, such as; clothing, acting, faire speech, names and on garb, persona creation and etiquette. Our newcomer information page is a good place to start for basic information and frequently asked questions. The motto of the Diamond Rose is "Honor Above All", in essence learning the swordsmanship methods and practices of the Renaissance era and using honor in skillful technique. Also taught is the history of the time period including the practice and theories of combat and proper Renaissance costume and dress. The art of fencing is grounded in the principles of Chivalry. Chief among these principles are respect for others, honor and fair play. The members of our school shall be dedicated to the development and pursuit of these principles within themselves through the study, appreciation and practice of the art of fencing. They shall strive to uphold these principles not only in the arena of their art but also in their daily lives within their respective communities. The Diamond Rose participates in many functions to promote the art of historical fencing. Some of these functions throughout the year include, active demonstrations at theaters, tournaments at Renaissance Faires, tournaments with other schools at other locations or events, fundraising events for local children's organizations, and events organized by the Diamond Rose for the purpose of promoting our students and school. Further information can be found by navigating through our website. Within this website you will find a generous amount of information on historical fencing from links to fencing articles and other historical fencing websites and organizations, photos of the family and friends of the Diamond Rose, links to Renaissance stuff, great reference links to historical fencing masters, information on equipment requirements, articles on Renaissance garb and, most of all, information on how to register for class so you can get started. Please feel free to contact Chris or Katie or Debbie by email regarding class locations or questions about the fascinating style of rapier fencing that is taught. Contact the Auburn Recreation District if you have questions about class times or cost/payment for lessons. The classroom is alway open to visitors.
